The extreme pressure of competition in the automotive industry leads to high requirements for the most efficient packaging logistics possible. In the framework of comprehensive process optimisation, Delta developed a holistic optimisation concept for a manufacturer of cylinder head covers.

In the first step, a detailed analysis was made of the current situation. There was a particular focus on the examination of the internal transport paths, the packing processes and packing times and a check of the current packaging design.

Using the Delta principle, weak points were revealed and possible efficiency potentials identified.

Previously two different types of packaging were used for the internal and the exporting shipping process. This meant a packing time, each time, of 70 sec./component per packing process. The workflow was as follows:

1. Preparation of reusable packaging
2. Filling of reusable packaging
3. Warehousing of reusable packaging
4. Re-packing in export packaging
